"The Big Lunch"; 2 millions of Britons lunch parties to re-build their community.

発案者の期待によればなんと200万人規模という大昼食会「The Big Lunch」が、英国時間の19日、全英各地でいっせいに開催された。
地域のコミュニティが失なわれているのは先進国に共通する悩みだが、この「The Big Lunch」は全英で同時に、近隣でのランチパーティを呼びかけるという初めての試みで、ふだんはすれ違うだけの「おとなりさん」と知り合いになろう、というプロジェクトだ。

"The Big Lunch", parties for 2 millions of Britons as expected by the originators, was held up and down the country on 19th in U.K.
"The Big Lunch" is the first project to get neighbors, who just have passed into the street, knowing each other with having lunch party together at the same time throughout the Britain while the community is becoming fractured and isolated in rich nations.

賛同した個人が主催することで、ローカルイベントを全英規模で同時多発させるというアイディアはユニークかつ大胆だが、首相官邸であるダウニング街10番地では、堅物で知られるダーリング財務大臣もホスト役に名乗り出た。ちなみに、財務大臣公邸は隣の11番地だ。
呼びかけたのはイギリスの巨大な複合型環境施設であり、また環境問題を考える組織でもあるエデンプロジェクト。創立者であるティム・スミットとポール・トゥウィヴィの思いつきから、壮大な計画が動き出した。

It is a very unique and daring idea that held lots of local event at the same time across the U.K. organized by people who want to join the project personally.
The financial minister Darling, known for hardhead, also named as the host at the Downing streets #10 where prime minister's office located in. Well, his place is #11, the next door.
This event is dreamed up by the Eden Project, a big environment complex and the environmental faculty in the U.K. Brainchild of Tim Smit and Paul Twivy, Eden Project founders, a magnificent project went-off.

それぞれのランチをとり仕切った人々も、そこに集った近隣の住人たちも、近くても遠かった「おとなりさん」との新しい出会いを楽しんだもよう。中には「オレの近所はロックなコミュニティだったぜ！」などとテンションの高い報告の書き込みもネットをにぎわせた。
また関係者によれば「次のビッグランチはいつなんだ？──って、みんながいってたよ」とのこと。

The people who organized lunch parties and the neighbors who gathered parties, both had enjoyed the very first meeting with their "close and distant" neighbors. There are many high-tensioned writings like "My neighbors, our community rocked!"
And officials say "When's the Big Lunch happening again? - That's what so many are saying".

この日、エデンプロジェクトの責任者、ティム・スミットは「人生のすばらしい事柄はシンプルで、素敵な思い出は私たち自身の手から生まれる。だからみんなを通りに出かけさせ、隣近所でグラスを掲げ、食事を分かち合ってもらうことを目指した。それがビッグランチなんだ」と語った。

On the day, Eden Project Chief Executive Tim Smit said "The greatest things in life are simple and great memories are usually made of things we do ourselves. So, our aim was for people to get out on their street, raise a glass and share a bite with their neighbours - that's The Big Lunch."

また、この「The Big Lunch」の責任者、ポール・トゥウィヴィは「何百万もの人が通りに出て、隣人たちとの出会いを楽しんでいるのを見て、英国はまだまだ大丈夫だという確信で晴れやかな気持ちになった。近所付き合いが暮らしの支えや人生の幸せにとって最大で、しかも手つかずの源なのだということに気付いた瞬間だ。この日曜に育まれた友情が、パーティの飾り付けを外した後もずっと続いていくことを願っているよ」と語った。

Also Paul Twivy, The Big Lunch CEO said, "It has been exhilarating to watch the momentum grow as millions turn out on the streets to have fun, to meet their neighbours and to prove that Britain is far from broken. It's time we realised that our neighbourhood is the biggest, untapped source of practical help and happiness in our lives. We hope that Sunday saw friendships forged that last long after the bunting was taken down."
