オバマ米大統領は9日、地球温暖化を阻止する取り組みにおいて、主要国は「重要な前進」を遂げたと評価した。一方、潘基文・国連事務総長は、主要国の取り組みは十分でないとの見方を示した。

U.S. president sees major countries' progress to prevent global warming

U.S. President Barack Obama said on 9th the major countries had made "important strides" towards arresting climate change by agreeing to limit warming. On the other hands, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said it was simply not enough.

潘基文・国連事務総長は「この問題は、人類や地球の未来のために、政治的かつ道徳的な急務であり、歴史的な責任だ」と述べた。
主要8カ国（G8）は、主要国首脳会議（ラクイラ・サミット）で、世界の気温上昇幅を摂氏2度（華氏3.6度）以内に抑えることで合意した。ただ、2050年までに温暖化ガスの排出量を半減させるという目標について、新興国の合意を取り付けることはできなかった。

"This is politically and morally (an) imperative and historic responsibility ... for the future of humanity, even for the future of the planet Earth," said Ban Ki-moon, U.N. chief.
The group of eight rich nations (G8) agreed to restrict global warming to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) in major countries meeting (L'aquila Summit). But they failed to persuade new developing countries to join in a push to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2050.

オバマ大統領は、主要国が1人当たりではより多くの温暖化ガスを排出しているなか、中国とインドが排出量の削減に消極的なのは理解できるとしたうえで、記者団に対し、「中国やインドは、発展や生活水準の向上を犠牲にする必要はない、ということを確認したがっている」と述べた。
さらに「今後の排出量の伸びのほとんどはこれらの国よるもので、こうした国の積極的な関与は解決に欠かせない」と指摘した。

The American president Obama said he understood China and India's qualms about reducing energy consumption when rich industrial powers had a much larger carbon footprint per capita. He also told reporters, "China and India want to make sure that they do not have to sacrifice their aspirations for development and higher living standards." Moreover Obama said, "Yet with most of the growth in projected emissions coming from these countries, their active participation is a prerequisite for a solution."
